This one tries to do something the genre usually skips. It answers the question precisely, then covers the part almost nobody covers well: where an LMS stops being enough on its own, and what “LMS” gets confused with in practice.
What is an LMS?
A Learning Management System (LMS) is software for creating, delivering and tracking training content online. It stores courses, assigns them to the right people, records who finished what, and reports on the results. That is the whole definition. Everything else you will read about an LMS, gamification, mobile access, integrations, is a feature built on top of those four functions, not a separate category.

Most organizations searching “what is an LMS” actually have a training program with a live, instructor-led component, meaning a Training Management System (TMS) is doing real work whether they have named it or not: someone is scheduling instructors, booking rooms, and managing session capacity, usually on a spreadsheet. A pure LMS does not solve that problem. How does an LMS work?
At a mechanical level, four things happen in sequence. An administrator or instructor uploads or builds a course. Admins manage the platform itself: user accounts, permissions, integrations and overall configuration. Learners are the end users completing courses, sitting assessments and, in more mature programs, tracking their own progress toward a role-based skill or certification target.

Two features are worth a specific note because they are oversold industry-wide. Gamification (badges, points, leaderboards) reliably lifts engagement among people already inclined to finish training, and does very little for people who avoid it. Self-hosted deployment, where the software runs on an organization’s own servers, still exists mainly in sectors with strict data residency requirements, and it trades convenience for control.
Pricing models vary more than deployment models. Does your training include any live or instructor-led component, now or planned? If yes, evaluate TMS capability alongside LMS capability, not as an afterthought, because bolting scheduling software onto an LMS later is a second project, not a feature toggle.
Does pricing scale with your learner count or your admin count? Model your actual headcount growth against both pricing structures before comparing feature lists, because the cost difference at scale often outweighs any single feature.
Can compliance reporting be produced on demand, in the format your specific regulator or auditor expects, without a manual rebuild? Ask to see an actual report, not a description of the reporting module.
Will the vendor run a trial or demo against your real content and real user roles, not a generic sandbox? A platform that looks identical to three competitors in a canned demo often behaves very differently once your actual course library and org structure are loaded into it.
Where an LMS is not enough on its own
An LMS alone will not schedule instructors against room and time constraints, which is a real operational problem the moment your training program includes any live component at scale. It will not manage physical resources like training equipment or simulators. And a platform advertising deep personalization is not automatically doing more than assigning different course lists to different groups.
